You've seen dozens of videos about the famous "10-step Korean routine" and thought to yourself: I'll never have time to do that every day. Good news: you don't have to. The true philosophy of K-beauty isn't about layering as many products as possible; it's about listening to your skin and giving it exactly what it needs, in the right order.
So we've simplified things. Here are the 7 essential steps to start a true Korean routine, without breaking the bank or spending an hour every evening.
Why the Korean routine works so well
In Korea, skincare isn't seen as a chore but as a preventative ritual. Rather than repairing damage after the fact (with makeup or harsh treatments), the focus is on deep hydration, gentle formulas, and consistency. The result: more resilient, radiant skin that ages better over time.
The secret isn't in the number of products, but in the order and coherence.
And what about the famous 10-step routine? You've probably heard of the "10-step routine," the historic and best-known version of K-beauty. In addition to what follows, it includes a toner and an essence used separately, a concentrated ampoule, and a sheet mask. Here, we present a condensed 7-step version: we've merged the toner and essence (two treatments with similar roles, often redundant for a daily routine) and removed the sheet mask and ampoule, which are occasional treatments rather than everyday steps. Nothing is lost: this is simply the daily foundation of the Korean routine, to which you can then add these complementary treatments if you wish.
The 7 essential steps (the foundation of the Korean routine)
1. Double cleansing
This is THE foundation of any Korean routine. In the evening, you cleanse in two stages:
- An oil or balm cleanser to dissolve makeup, sebum, and pollution
- A foaming or gel cleanser to remove residues and purify the skin
In the morning, a single gentle cleanse is usually sufficient, unless you have very oily skin.
2. Exfoliation (1 to 2 times a week)
No need to exfoliate every day. A gentle, preferably chemical exfoliant (with AHA/BHA), once or twice a week is enough to reveal a more even complexion without harming the skin barrier.
3. Toner or essence
This is where K-beauty truly stands out. Essence is an ultra-fluid treatment, often based on fermented ingredients, which prepares the skin to better absorb subsequent treatments. Toner, on the other hand, rebalances the pH after cleansing. Both deeply hydrate from this step.
4. Targeted serum
This is the time to address a specific issue: dark spots, imperfections, dullness, early signs of aging. Choose a serum concentrated in active ingredients (vitamin C, niacinamide, centella asiatica...) according to your current needs.
5. Eye contour cream
The skin around the eyes is thinner and shows signs of aging faster. A specific cream or gel helps prevent dark circles and fine lines without overloading the rest of the face.
6. Moisturizer
It seals in all previous treatments and maintains hydration throughout the day or night. Choose a texture according to your skin type: light gel for oily skin, rich cream for dry skin.
7. Sun protection (morning, without exception)
This is probably the most underestimated step outside of Korea, and yet the most important. An SPF applied every morning, even on cloudy days, is the number one anti-aging gesture. No serum in the world will compensate for skin unprotected from the sun.
To go further: the additions to the 10-step routine
Once these 7 steps are well established in your daily life, you can pick from the occasional treatments of the original routine:
- Ampoule: an ultra-concentrated version of the serum, to be used as a several-week treatment to boost a targeted concern (radiance, firmness, intense hydration)
- Sheet mask: to be used 1 to 3 times a week, after cleansing and before serum, for an immediate boost
These are extras, not essentials. They make sense once the foundation is well established.
How to adapt this routine to your rhythm
You don't need to do all 7 steps morning AND night. A simplified version works very well:
- Morning: gentle cleanser, essence or toner, light serum, cream, SPF
- Evening: double cleanse, exfoliant (2x/week), essence, targeted serum, eye contour, cream
Consistency is key, not perfection. A simple routine followed every day will yield better results than a complex routine abandoned after two weeks.
Where to start concretely?
If you're just starting, there's no need to buy everything at once. Begin with the fundamentals: a good cleanser, an essence or toner, and a moisturizer suited to your skin. You can add targeted serums and specific treatments as you identify your skin's real needs.
At Karenation, we select authentic Korean skincare products, designed for each step of this routine, so you can build yours gradually, without pressure and without unnecessary products.
Skin needs time to show results: allow 4 to 6 weeks of regular use before judging the effectiveness of a new product.
